Plantation Island Resort
Plantation Island is a popular child friendly resort that is only a 40-60 min boat ride from Port Denarau.
We booked a two bedroom garden bure, which was ideal for a family of five. The master bedroom has a queen bed and the other bedroom has two single beds. In our case with three children, one of the couches doubled as the third bed. We put the youngest to sleep in our bed each night then transferred her onto the lounge/bed, which worked really well.
The rooms have two air conditioning units and four ceiling fans so sleeping at night was not a problem. It was lovely to come back into the cool air-conditioned room after being out in the heat.
One thing to be aware of is that the bures do not have kitchen facilities. There is a small bar fridge and a jug with a couple of coffee mugs but that is it. If you are thinking of bringing some food from home, it is a good idea to keep this in mind. We took snacks from New Zealand for the kids to eat during the day to help cut down on costs and that worked really well.
The beach at Plantation is ideal for children. The inflatable waterpark opens twice a day (depending on the tide). You can borrow life jackets from the resort and our kids absolutely loved it! The beach is great for swimming and changes dramatically during the day. We started most mornings with a swim when the tide was high. Later in the afternoon when the tide had gone out, we could explore the sand searching for starfish, crabs and many other interesting discoveries. This was also the perfect time of day to take the children out to the coral. You can walk out and do not have to swim far before you can start snorkelling. It is so much fun watching all the marine life on display. We had a lot of trouble getting the kids to come back out of the water! A good tip is to purchase reef shoes and snorkel gear before you leave New Zealand!
There are three pools on Plantation and we spent a lot of time in the kid’s pool. There is a small rock pool (which my 5 year old really enjoyed) as well as a larger pool. The larger pool has a slide that the older kids loved they spent ages going up and down making new friends along the way. The pool is very deep (over my husband’s head in parts) which did surprise us! We just got in the pool with the kids each time and it was fine.
Our three children are all under 10 years old and it really was the ideal resort to stay at with them. We had a wonderful family holiday and will treasure the memories forever.
