SEOUL: MORE THAN JUST THE HOME OF GANGNAM STYLE

heading icon

Remember that crazy music video from Korean pop star PSY back in 2012? Gangnam Style put South Korea - and Seoul in particular - on the map. But this city is more than just the home of quirky pop music. There is truly something for every type of traveller here.

FASCINATING HISTORY AND CULTURE

Seoul offers a unique blend of ultra-modern and ancient. Filled with the latest technological gadgets and fashion, it's also a city that continues to pay homage to its history and traditions. The World Heritage-listed Changdeokgung dates back to the early 15th century and has beautiful paved courtyards, splendid gardens and the fascinating former living quarters of the royal family to explore. There are numerous other palaces and temples to discover around the city. Bukchon Hanok Village is another great place to visit for history buffs and culture vultures. It's home to hundreds of traditional houses you can walk around, eat at or even stay at, immersing yourself in traditional Korean culture right in the heart of the city itself.

BEAUTIFUL NATURE

heading icon

Do a quick image search of Seoul on Google and we wouldn't be surprised if your impression of Seoul was that it's just a big city with bright lights and tall skyscrapers. But there are plenty of opportunities to get into nature, from Namsan Park in the centre of Seoul to beautiful hiking trails and mountains on the outskirts of the city. Bukhansan National Park and the Gwanaksan Trail both offer adventurous travellers the chance to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

DELICIOUS FOOD

heading icon

You might have had Korean BBQ here in New Zealand, but there's nothing like experiencing the real thing. You'll find gogi-jip ("meat houses") on almost every street corner, serving up their version of the Korean barbeque experience. The Mapo district is the best known for Korean barbeque, and is home to a restaurant that the late Anthony Bourdain dined at and loved. But we suggest you try for yourself and see what you can find. Aside from Korean barbeque you'll find some delicious street food - try one of the food stalls in Gwangjang Market to get a taste of the Seoul the locals savour.
